Boardmasters 2016

Boardmasters Festival returns to Watergate Bay and Fistral beach every year for surfing, skate, BMX and many more as well as the main feature of the event, the music. Line Up

This year the line up for me was a bit of a mixed bag. I was particularly excited for Catfish and the Bottlemen following the disappointment of them pulling out last year.

Of course we were also super excited for Kaiser Cheifs and James Bay but also some of the less well known acts on the smaller stages. At Boardmasters you can see really intimate sets with many up and coming stars on stages with amazing backdrops and settings.

It was good to see some new stages at Boardmasters this year and many more acts than usual. The Land of the Saints stage was a great addition and had some really good acts headlining these stages, even continuing after the main stage headliner had finished.

Although I didn’t manage to get to any, the beach sessions also looked amazing, especially Sunset Sons. So if you are heading to Newquay before the festival has started I would definately pick up some tickets for these extra events beforehand as they are a lot less busy and look like they would be a lot of fun.

However, aside from the music my favourite part of this festival is the atmosphere and the activities on the beach. These are free for anyone to come to, even if you don’t have a ticket to Boardmasters, and you can watch top BMX riders, WSL surfing and skateboarding, all on fistral beach! What more could you want?

The only issue with the beach activities is how far away they are from the festival. You should definately think before you get the bus into fistral as the queues to get back to Watergate Bay for the music are crazy. However, obviously parking isn’t much better with the amount of people decending on the area.

BUT get there early, have a shower at fistral beach and grab a quick breakfast and you’ll be set for the day.

Boardmasters is now one of Cornwalls largest events and it is definately worth a visit if you haven’t been before. However, I would beware that it is becoming more popular with younger people and some of the emphasis on surfing is being lost because of this. Also, as with all festivals, the campsite can be very crowded and a large proportion of tents get broken or damaged, or worse broken into. Please remember never to take valuable items to a festival and leave them in your tent! Lock them safe in the car or keep them on your person.
