Boardmasters is part of the World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series and therefore showcases lots of local talent as well as travelling surfers who are looking to qualify for the World Championship Tour.
How it works…
There are two main rankings systems in the WSL, the Championship Tour rankings and the Qualifying Series rankings. To get onto the Championship Tour you must qualify through the Qualifying Series events – the best 5 results will count towards the rankings. This meant that last year on the Men’s Championship Tour there was the top 22 finishers from the previous Championship Tour plus the top 10 from the Qualifying Series plus 2 WSL windcards.
This means that the surfers you see at Boardmasters have every chance of making it onto the Championship Tour and travelling with the top surfers to compete across the world.
As well as the shortboard competitions, Boardmasters is also the home of the European leg of the WSL Longboard series. This means that the European Longboard Champion will be crowned on Fistral beach in August.
How to watch
You do not have to have a ticket to Boardmasters festival to be able to watch the surfing or skate! It all takes place down on Fistral Beach and is completely open to the public so get yourself down there for the day. The atmosphere is great and there is loads going on all day.
